A LEVEL POETRY STUDY DAY at LEDBURY POETRY FESTIVAL
Friday 5th July 2024
10am – 3.30pm The Community Hall, Ledbury

Open to Sixth Form Students studying A level literature and their teachers.
10-11am Zaffar Kunial introduces the day and looks at one poem he has written and unpicks how, giving insights into the creative process. Includes 10 mins Q&A at the end of the session. Zaffar’s first collection Us was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize. His second collection England’s Green won the 2023 Ledbury Hellens Poetry Prize. His work is on the Edexcel Resources list so will be familiar to students.
11-11.15 Break
11.15-12.15 Esther Menon, Consultant for Pearson Edexcel A level English Literature, will provide an interactive session for students. This will focus on reading and writing about unseen poetry in exam conditions and how students can improve confidence and skills.
12.15-1.15 Lunch Break. Please explore Ledbury, visit Ledbury Poetry House, visit the walled garden etc. There is a wide choice of places to buy food in Ledbury.
1.15-2.15 Imtiaz Dharker will present her selection of love poems and talk through how she reads them – revealing insights into how to talk about unseen poetry. Includes 10 mins Q&A at end of session. Imtiaz Dharker holds a Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry and has a new collection Shadow Reader out in 2024. Her work is studied on the GCSE English syllabus and so she will be familiar to your students.
2.15-2.30 Break
2.30 – 3.30 Opportunity to workshop writing poetry with Dr.Ruth Stacey from The School of Humanities, University of Worcester.
Books will be available to buy in the venue and in Ledbury Poetry House.
